Where to stay near Bassano del Grappa
WHY TO VISIT BASSANO AND IT'S SURROUNDINGS
If you're planning a holiday to Northern Italy and the Veneto region, Bassano del Grappa should be top of your list of places to visit.
Founded in the Roman era, Bassano and the surrounding area is steeped in history, not least of which is the famous "Ponte Vecchio" or Old Bridge, which crosses the River Brenta where it passes through the center of the town. The spirit "Grappa" was also invented here in Bassano, with the famous distilleries Poli and Nardini a must for grappa tasting!
Nearby is the beautiful walled city of Cittadella, with the original walls from 1220 still fully intact today, it is truly a sight to behold.
Not much farther, Asolo is set in the mountains, and has been known as "The City of a Hundred Horizons" due to it's incredible views, particularly from the Fortress.
To the west lies Marostica, world famous for the "live chess game" played in the center of town every two years; complete with period costumes and live horses! It also features a beautiful castle and a quintessential town piazza, and hosts various musical events throughout the year.
WHERE TO STAY
The town center of Bassano, whilst wonderful to visit, can get very busy. Nights are lively, parking&driving around the center difficult and hotels can get rather expensive! The perfect solution is to stay outside Bassano. At 3-5minutes drive from the center you'll find the beautiful little town of Pove del Grappa. Pove is widely renowned for it's delicious olive oil, and is home to the furthest north olive cultivations of all Italy. Here you can stay in serenity and tranquility, just minutes from Bassano and all it's delights. Nearby there is the River Brenta and the offer of canoeing and rafting, and behind you can see the pre-alps; perfect for paragliding and hangliding, or mountain biking and walking.
In all, this little town is truly a gem to be sought out, for the opportunity to visit Bassano del Grappa, or for sports, hiking and sight-seeing!
We recommend staying at Albergo (Hotel) Miramonti, a historic hotel in the center of Pove, recently renovated; they offer bright, modern rooms and excellent service at competitive prices. There are also a number of good B&B's in the area if they are fully booked!
